About this event
The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is a citizen-scientist initiative that has been carried out every year since the first one on Christmas Day in 1900. The first one had 25 birders that found 90 species and we now have counting circles all over the North American continent and stretching into Central and South America, with thousands participating. The CBC is organized by the Audubon Society and its records dating back over a century have been used by the Environmental Protection Agency, US Fish & Wildlife Service, and many conservation organizations.
Here in Brookland we have been participating in the CBC for around 35 years and we welcome all levels of birding experience, including kids.
We usually have enough experienced birders that we can help newbies and it always helps to have extra eyes looking all around. It is often bad weather, but this count goes on, whatever the weather.
Logistics: We will gather at the home of our guide, Anne, in Brookland at 9:00 am for coffee, tea, nibbles and a short talk about the history of the CBC. We will review the birds we may see at the Reservoir and then we will carpool to count birds at the McMillan Reservoir from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm by walking along the west sidewalk by the reservoir. We will use binoculars and scope to identify and count birds around the Reservoir and will mark our observations on the official checklist.
If you would like to carpool, masking is recommended.
