Poetry & Petunias: Introductory Haiku Workshop

What makes good haiku? Haiku is an excellent, calming practice for strengthening wonder and contemplation. Yet good haiku goes beyond the 5-7-5 syllable structure that students are often taught in school.

Join published poet Melanie Weldon-Soiset for a voyage through this famous poetic form. During this introductory workshop, we'll explore key characteristics of haiku, look at classical and contemporary examples, and have ample quiet time to write our own. There will then be time to debrief.

By the end of the workshop, participants will gain deeper appreciation of haiku traits, practice at engaging this contemplative form, as well as drafts of one or more of their own haiku.

This workshop is open to all levels of poetry experience, including novice. Masks are optional. Masks are optional. This is an outdoor event, but we will move indoors if there is inclement weather. Proof of vaccination and booster shot will be required on site if the event is held indoors due to inclement weather.
