What is this?
Join Brookland neighbor, poet and actor Quique Aviles for a short poetry reading, followed by a discussion regarding the role of the arts in creating social change. Originally from El Salvador, Quique writes from an immigrant perspective unique to the East Coast and speaks to the realities for Latinos and people of color living in the US. He has planted his performance style and his work with DC oral histories to create characters that speak to the human condition and our emphasis on preserving and prioritizing our sense of dignity.
Speaker Bio:
Quique has been writing, performing, and leading community arts projects in the Washington DC area for more than 35 years. A graduate of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Quique co-founded the LatiNegro Theater Collective (1985) and Sol & Soul (1999), both of which created socially-conscious art with people from the community.
