Do you want be a Village Volunteer?

Our Greater Brookland Intergenerational Village (GBIV) Volunteers provide help to our full members. This includes anything from a ride to a medical appointment, decluttering and organizing, meal delivery, yard work, or light handyman services. Become a Village Volunteer and lend a helping hand!

This training is open to anyone living in Ward 5, both current members and non-members. See our Volunteer page to complete a simple application ahead of the training. During the training, learn (1) how volunteers support the village, (2) our expectations for volunteers and our commitment to you, and (3) how to be prepared any situation.

Village members are invited to Laura‘s Brookland home for a potluck. Come and meet new neighbors, enjoy familiar faces, and pick up your GBIV tote bag if you haven‘t already! Come say hello and continue to build relationships with your neighbors. There is a limit of 15 people for this event. All Member Social‘s are potluck optional. Please bring something to share if you can.

Can‘t make this one? Our goal to host one Social Hour each month, rotating to each neighborhood in our Village.

Our knitting group meets the first Wednesday of the month at Woodridge library from 6-7:30pm. Do you already have a project you are working on but want a group to support your progress and to chat with while you work? Are you a beginner in knitting or crochet and want to learn? Join our Knitting group! We will have supplies to help get you started if you need them. Meet at Art Enables, gallery space on the bottom floor, for Art Class with Marja, our Village member and practicing artist.

If laughter is the best medicine, creativity is the best vitamin. Come exercise your artistic side with new friends under the guidance of our art instructor Marja and make something fun! This month we will use oil pastels to make a still life. All materials are provided but you can bring a fruit or something special to you that you would like included in the still life.

Join GBIV at Woodridge Library, where we will discuss “Creatures of Passage” by Morowa Yejide.

Our neighborhood game night features board games like Scrabble, Yahtzee, Rummikub, and more for the adults. Your kids are welcome too! For the littler ones, we will have Sorry, Memory, and Connect 4. Beginners welcome. Bring a game of your own (or use ours), grab a drink or a snack, and have fun!

This event is held every second Wednesday of the month at Right Proper Brewery on Girard Street. We’ll plan to play on the patio when the weather is warm, and for those cooler evenings, Right Proper has also offered to host us in the back production space. Right Proper does not sell food but you may bring your own (Tastemakers or Menomale are both nearby options).

During this virtual member orientation you will meet with the staff and other members, learn about the broader Village movement, here what Greater Brookland Village offers, and learn how to use navigate our website to stay informed on monthly programs and add yourself to the member directory. Full members will learn how to request volunteer support. Bring your questions! This is an informal "office hours" on Zoom for you ask whatever questions you have.

Join Village members Laura Worby and Sharon White for a morning at the Planet Word Museum. Meet either at the Brookland metro station at 9:30am or in the museum lobby at 10am. Let us know if we should expect you at the metro station. We‘ll have your passes! Please register ahead of time.
