THIS IS AN EXPTERNAL EVENT. Join this panel of experts from Ingleside Engaged Living for this program that explores the window of time from once someone makes the decision to move their loved one into a memory program and how the three-legged stool of orientation, training, and therapeutic programs should be used to appropriately support the new resident and their primary caregiver in the transition to a residential memory program. This presentation will focus on what an appropriate orientation and transition plan looks like, how to evaluate if the memory care community has robust programming, and what to look for in terms of family and caregiver support and education.

This presentation by Sarah Szanton, PhD, RN, FAAN, Dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and the Patricia M. Davidson Health Equity and Social Justice Endowed Professor, will explore the CAPABLE program (Community Aging in Place: Advancing Better Living for Elders).
You may recognize Sarah Szanton’s name from a recent article in the Washington Post. She was featured in Health and Science section on March 4: https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2025/03/03/capable-aging-support-nurse-repairs/
Prior to becoming Dean, Dr. Szanton co-developed the CAPABLE program for older adults to age in community. This program, which involves a nurse, an occupational therapist and a handyworker, started in Baltimore and has now spread to 23 States. The idea began in 2009 when she was making house calls as a visiting nurse in West Baltimore and observed that people’s home environments could be just as disabling as their medical conditions. Dr. Szanton maintains research on CAPABLE as well as on the impact of financial strain on health, and the measurement of structural racism and resilience across the life course.
Dr. Szanton co-developed and led research and scale of the CAPABLE program for older adults and now is working to develop Neighborhood Nursing, a potentially transformative model of care. In 2022, Szanton launched the impactful Policy Honors Program to help students develop skills to influence policies that improve health. She also created the Institute for Policy Solutions, which is a hub for health policy leadership and research capacity development for global nurse leaders and scientists. Szanton has testified on Capitol Hill regarding the nursing workforce and faculty shortages. She is the thought leader behind a new model of universal preventive care called Neighborhood Nursing.

Join Us for Front Porch Fridays!
Brookland friends and neighbors—let’s build community one conversation at a time! GBIV’s newest initiative, Front Porch Fridays, is all about connection, laughter, and the simple joy of gathering together.
Every First Friday, we invite you to step onto a front porch, pull up a chair, and enjoy casual conversations with old and new friends. No RSVP, no agenda—just good company, light snacks, and a warm sense of belonging.
Keep reading for details.
Where? Anywhere in the Brookland area. You are welcome to host or join!
When? Every First Friday of the Months of May, June, July and August -anytime between 5:30 - 7:30pm
Why? Because small moments of connection make our community stronger!
Bring a snack to share (or just yourself!), invite a neighbor, and let’s make Brookland feel even more like home. See you on the porch!
