GBIV is so very pleased to spotlight Right Proper Brewery.

Right Proper Brewing Company has become more than just a neighborhood brewery—it’s a true community partner. Located right here in our backyard, they’ve opened their doors for fundraisers, game nights, and gatherings that bring neighbors together. With a welcoming atmosphere and a commitment to supporting local initiatives, Right Proper continues to show what it means to be a good neighbor.

We’re especially grateful to Bri, Right Proper’s Taproom Manager, for sharing these reflections and for the team’s ongoing generosity. Their support makes it possible for our community to connect, celebrate, and grow stronger together.

1. What inspired you to open Right Proper Brewery here in Brookland, and what makes this neighborhood special to you?

Right Proper is a neighborhood brand making beers for the people who call DC home. Brookland is not only one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, but it is a residential neighborhood with a vibrant art scene and strong community ties. We opened our brewpub in Shaw 12 years ago, and 10 years ago it seemed like Brookland may be a good fit for us to expand with our production facility, and it has been a wonderful experience to be a part of a neighborhood that shares the same sense of community that we do.

2. How do you see Right Proper contributing to community life in Brookland—beyond serving great beer?

We're very neighbor focused and when planning events, looking for organizations to support, or taste testing a new beer, we look to our direct community first. Brookland neighbors are the folks brewing and serving our beers, hosting our book sales and weekly trivia, decorating the taproom for holidays, and sharing their opinions about our products. We're happy to be the place where people want to host their community meetings, fundraisers, birthday parties or simply gather with one another for a beer or two. It's the least we could do for a neighborhood who supports us day after day.

3. What do you most enjoy about connecting with neighbors and local organizations through the brewery?

I've had the opportunity of working in the taproom for the last seven years and my favorite part of coming to work every day is getting to hang out with the neighbors. The taproom is cozy and has a real neighborhood watering- hole atmosphere. It truly is a place where everyone knows your name, or soon will. It's a place where everyone gathers to celebrate their life milestones, I've hosted baby showers for neighbors whose kids are now coming to tell me about their first day at their new school. I've seen first dates turn into marriages, celebrated countless birthdays, and even seen how neighbors rally together on the patio to get through the tough stuff.

Brookland has a lot of very cool groups and organizations that we've had the opportunity to work with. We've enjoyed supporting organizations such as Friends of Noyes Park, Greater Brookland Garden Club and Greater Brookland Intergenerational Village, whether it's through a beer donation, providing a space to gather, or simply posting a flyer in the taproom. I've personally enjoyed working on GBIV game night days, not only has it made slower days more fun because I get to play games, but it has also influenced the collection of games we have available in the taproom.

4. Looking ahead, what’s something exciting you’d like the community to know about Right Proper—whether it’s an upcoming event, a new brew, or your vision for the future?

At the end of this year Right Proper Brewing will turn 12 years old as a company, as well as celebrate 10 years in Brookland! We're also in the process of opening a third location over in the Eckington neighborhood. The Eckington location will be a neighborhood brewpub, with food and a brewhouse. It's currently in the construction phase with the goal of opening later this year or start of 2026. We're also brewing up something special in celebration of the upcoming Brookland Centennial!
