GBIV Receives $120,000 Next50 Grant

Greater Brookland Intergenerational Village (GBIV) is proud to announce a $120,000 grant from Next50 that will support its existing work in Ward 5 of Washington, DC, and help develop practical tools that will be shared across the DC Villages network.

Next50 is a national foundation working toward a society that values aging and makes growing older an empowering, fulfilling experience. For GBIV, this investment represents an important next step in our growth.

Since our founding, GBIV has focused on a simple idea: neighbors should have the relationships and tools they need to age successfully in their community. Through volunteer support, social connection, educational programs, transportation assistance and other community-based resources, GBIV helps older adults and adults with disabilities remain connected, independent and engaged.

The Next50-supported work will allow GBIV to take what we are learning directly from residents and turn those lessons into resources that can benefit communities beyond our own.

"We know from our work with residents that aging successfully is about much more than whether someone can remain in their home," said Wendy Brehm, Executive Director of GBIV. "It's about whether people have the relationships, information, resources and community support they need to continue participating in the places they call home. This investment from Next50 gives us the opportunity to continue learning from our communities and use what we learn to help strengthen aging-in-place models across DC."

The project is particularly focused on benefiting low-income and BIPOC older adults and people with disabilities, including people who may face economic insecurity, difficulty accessing public benefits, or fragmented systems of support.

"We are grateful to Next50 for recognizing the value of community-based solutions and for investing in GBIV's capacity to learn, share and build for the future," Brehm said.

The work will complement GBIV's continued expansion across the Greater Brookland area and our growing partnerships throughout the District.

ABOUT US

Greater Brookland Intergenerational Village (GBIV), or the Brookland Village, is a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to connecting neighbors across generations to develop relationships and access tools to age successfully in our community.

Run largely by our members, the majority of whom serve as volunteers, GBIV represents the communities of Brookland, Brentwood, Langdon, University Heights, and Woodridge.

WHAT WE DO

Like other community-based “villages” around DC and across the country, GBIV strives to:

  • Support neighbors run and participate in social and wellness activities and educational workshops
  • Lead aging- and wellness-related discussions on key topics impacting our communities (such as  workshops on smartphone use and new technology, tips for avoiding falls, or job searching in the digital age).
  • Match compassionate and trained volunteers with neighbors to provide 1:1 assistance.

OUR VISION

We envision a community where all neighbors...

  • Feel welcome, seen, and valued—regardless of their age, race or ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, health, or socioeconomic status

    • Build meaningful relationships between neighbors
    • Feel empowered and inspired to change Greater Brookland for the better
    • Learn new tools and practices to age successfully in their community

    OUR HISTORY

In the fall of 2018, several neighbors came together to dream up how to bring the Village model–a way to support our aging community–to Ward 5. After a series of community roundtables and rich conversations at local Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) and Brookland Neighborhood Civic Association (BNCA) meetings, where we learned from neighbors about what kind of services and programs would be most helpful, the Greater Brookland Intergenerational Village (GBIV) was born.

In May 2019, we formed an official board. In January 2020, we held a launch party at Alice's Jazz & Cultural Society to let the neighborhood know we were open for business.

While the pandemic presented many challenges in GBIV’s early days, we’ve accomplished so much in our first three years. Now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with over 80 members, two staff members, and an active board of directors and two working committees, GBIV has hosted over 400 neighborhood events and wellness programs—and counting! Come meet us at an upcoming event near you.
